Youth Volunteer Opportunities
We are often asked what kids can do to help the animals in King George. To volunteer at the shelter, or with the cats at Petco, kids must be at least 13, and kids 13 to 17 years old need to have a parent or guardian with them at all times. If your child is under 13, or is interested in helping outside of the shelter, there are many volunteer opportunities available.

King George Animal Control’s Youth Outreach for Animals program is looking for passionate and serious minded kids to be animal advocates teaching and encouraging others.

If a child is tall enough, and a pSpadeSistersarent is with them, they can volunteer to wear the Sally or Sadie Spade costume at events. Sally and Sadie are KGAC mascots.   As part of the Youth Outreach for Animals program, they promote animal kindness, care, safety and population control.

If the kids are passionate about helping animals, they can volunteer to help at events, as long as they have a parent present. The King George Animal Control table often has activities for kids, such as a mock-up animal shelter, complete with stuffed animals that kids can “adopt,” as well as various games that kids can help manage.

Talk to your child’s teachers or the faculty about ideas your child may have to raise awareness and donations. The school may agree to ideas such as donation drives, art contests, raffles or other fundraisers to help the animals. Your child can also use assignments like book reviews or show-and-tell to feature a story about an animal. If invited by the school, Sally and Sadie Spade may even be able to make a special appearance!

If a group of children would like to coordinate their own event to raise awareness for shelter animals and animal kindness, they can also invite Sally and Sadie Spade to attend.
Library

The Youth Outreach for Animals program currently has a "loaner library" available to elementary school classes, grades 2 - 6.  Scholastic books about animals are left with the class and can be taken home for reading.  The library is dropped off by a KGAC volunteer.  Sally and Sadie will come in on the day the books are removed to let the kids tell them what they learned about kindness to animals.  Sally and Sadie are available by invitation to visit Pre-K, K and 1st grade classes.  A volunteer will come along to read a book about animals to the class.  If kids would like to, they can create a fundraising project by getting pledges from family and friends for the amount of time they spend reading these books.

Fundraising is an excellent way to raise money for the King George Animal Rescue League. From lemonade stands and bake sales to car washes and book sales, the possibilities are endless. Kids get a chance to learn about running a business and help out a worthy cause. Kids can also request donations of pet supplies, or monetary donations, in lieu of birthday gifts. Parents are encouraged to take pictures of the child’s efforts, and KGARL can share them on our Facebook page.

Arts and crafts can be a way for kids to explore their creativity while making items for the animal shelter. Items like old blankets and towels that normally get thrown away can also become great donation items. Scraps of fleece can be braided or knotted together to form a dog toy.  Children can also draw pictures depicting animal kindness that can be put on the bulletin board at the King George animal shelter.

Homemade treats can be a fun project, and of course the animals will love the results. Check the lists of toxic items for cats or dogs, depending on the type of treat you are making, to ensure they are safe.

Kids can create flyers to be distributed to neighbors and friends to raise awareness about your local animal shelter (parents should accompany children on these outings).

Share content from KGARL’s website, or Facebook account. Let everyone in your online social circle know that this group is important to you, and ask them to help out too.
